How to Use Essential Oils To Help DEPRESSION

Depression is a common and very serious mental illness that can seriously negatively affect someone’s life. Depression is not only sadness, it is also the loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. This affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves and cannot only cause emotional issues, but physical problems as well. Depression may occur once in someone’s lifetime, but for others it is something that they are constantly struggling with. The feeling of sadness, lack of interest, and loss can cause insomnia, change of appetite, fatigue, poor concentration, suicidal thoughts as well as physical symptoms like headaches and backaches.

Possible causes of depression include a combination of biological, physiological, and social sources of distress. Changes in your hormones can cause or trigger depression. Psychological counseling and antidepressant medication are often prescribed. Being on antidepressants can come with a lot of side effects like insomnia, weight gain, fatigue, dizziness, loss of appetite, anxiety, and sexual dysfunction.

But… Can Essential Oils Help?

Yes, they can! When it comes to emotions, aromatherapy can be very beneficial. When essential oils are inhaled, smell receptors in the nose send a message to the limbic system in charge of behaviour and emotions, and this can be used to reduce negative feelings.

They are multiple essential oils that have a positive impact on people’s mood. Research has shown that the aroma of citrus can help normalize hormone levels, which can allow the dosage of antidepressants to be reduced. Other essential oils that can help are:

  • Lavender
  • Hiba
  • Patchouli
  • Sweet Marjoram
  • Jasmine
  • Clary Sage
  • Cypress
  • Lavandin
  • Ylang-Ylang
