What are essential oils?

Essential oils are a concentrated, volatile aromatic liquid that is obtained from seeds, fruits, flowers, roots, bark, or other different parts of a plant. Naturally, plants create essential oils and store them in tiny molecular sacks. Similarly, fruits also create their own essential oils and store them in the rinds of their fruit. True essential oils are as following:

  1. One that has been grown in its indigenous area
  2. It is harvested at its peak time
  3. Properly distilled
  4. Not altered in any way

Essential oils can do so much for you, the scent can invoke physiological changes in both the mind and the body. When inhaled, smell receptors in the nose send a message to the limbic system in charge of behaviour and emotions. This is also connected to our hormones, memory, stress, and blood pressure. When the essential oils are either applied on the skin or ingested, these are small enough to penetrate the skin or other tissues on the body within 20 minutes (Branson, 2017). Essential oils are rich in different properties like antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, as well as pain-relieving abilities. Essential oils do not contain hormones, vitamins, minerals, or nutrients.
